Chatham Lighthouse

March 18, 2019

In my post on Nauset Light, I mentioned that it was a sister to the lighthouse in Chatham. Nauset Light was moved in 1923 leaving the lone lighthouse in Chatham. Two lighthouses were used to distinguish the Chatham lights from Cape Cod Light further north. Apparently this was deemed too expensive and the government started phasing them out in the early 1900’s. More on this and a nice photo of the twin lighthouses can be found at http://www.newenglandlighthouses.net/chatham-light-history.html. An upgrade of the lens in 1969 gave the lighthouse the larger housing on top, which is why it no longer matches Nauset Light.

The other lighthouses I have shown are either fully automated and unmanned or fully automated and supported by local groups. Chatham is still an active Coast Guard facility, with on-duty personnel. (1)

The lighthouse was featured in the movie The Finest Hours.

It wasn’t really that foggy when taken. That’s a bit of digital editing to capture a mood.
