Sandy Neck

March 19, 2019

Sandy Neck, located in Barnstable, MA on Cape Cod, dates from 1857. It is made of brick, but due to structural issues had to be reinforced with steel bands in the late 1800s (you can see those in the photo). (1,2)

The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1931 and sold to a private buyer. The light was removed and the top removed to prevent reflections off the glass causing confusion to navigation. With help from the American Lighthouse Foundation, the owner was able to reinstall the light in 2007. (1,2)
