Long Point Light

March 15, 2019

My prior post on Wood End Light referenced its identical twin – Long Point Light. Long Point is located near the very end of Cape Cod, sticking out into Provincetown Harbor. This shot was taken from a wharf in the harbor, showing Long Point beyond the breakwater.

I learned while researching this (courtesy of Wikipedia), that there was a village here from 1827 to 1850 (Long Point). It grew to have 38 fishing families, with a schoolhouse, post office, bakery, and more. When the settlement was disbanded:

” Most of the families took their houses with them when they left — the houses were placed on rafts and floated across the harbor to Provincetown’s West End. Several of those historic “floater” homes are still standing, and can be identified by looking for the distinctive blue and white plaques. “
