A Pyramid in Memphis

September 20, 2016

Having come off seeing a full-size replica of The Parthenon in Nashville, we were surprised to find a large pyramid along the Mississippi River in Memphis. Originally conceived in 1954, a scaled-back plan was approved years later.  Opened in 1991, The Pyramid was the home court for the University of Memphis men’s basketball team and later the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.  Originally thought to be large enough for an NBA team, it wasn’t and when the Grizzlies moved to Memphis from Vancouver, it was recognized that a new stadium would be required (resulting in the FedEx Forum). After many failed ideas, an agreement was reached with Bass Pro Shops.  It opened to the public in October 2015.

Unlike other Bass Pro Shops, this features a steampunk-themed rooftop bar, aquarium,  and observation deck (which you reach by taking the 28-story, 320′ free standing elevator).  It is also a Bass Pro Shop hotel and restaurant.
