A Visit to Cardiff

February 14, 2016

I’ve been to many places in my life, and there are many I hope to get to someday.  I never expected that one of those locations would be Cardiff, Wales.  Up until late last year, I barely knew of it. Then my daughter – who was studying abroad in London – said she wanted to visit it and we agreed to go along while we were visiting here.

For those who, like me, didn’t know much of the city:

From Wikipedia: Cardiff “is the capital and largest city in Wales and the tenth largest city in the United Kingdom.” It also happens to be where the BBC does a lot of filming for Doctor Who and a spinoff series known as Torchwood.

It was a great visit and I can’t speak highly enough of Cardiff Castle. It was too much to see in a one-day trip from London.  However, I have to first acknowledge that it was the Torchwood series that attracted my daughter, who wanted to see the most pointless destination ever – the Ianto Jones Shrine:

It is a shrine to a character from the show. Not the actor – he’s alive and well – the character of Ianto Jones. Apparently the character was killed off here (the show is a few years old, so no spoilers here).  Despite being a Trip Advisor -rated attraction, you can absolutely avoid it.

Sites that are worth seeing:

The Cardiff waterfront and the Norwegian Church where Roald Dahl was baptized.
