Little Known Sights in Connecticut, Part 3
Haystack Mountain State Park, Norfolk, CT
A short but uphill walk brings you to this stone tower. Commissioned by Ellen Battell Stoecker in 1929, it sits atop Haystack Mountain. She donated $50,000 to the state to have it built, increase the size of the park and built a road for cars. Her dad had built a wooden tower here in 1886, which was destroyed by a gale in 1897.
Plaque on the tower (similar to that on its predecessor) which reads “To Thy God, Country, Family and Town, be ever faithful.”
View of downtown Norfolk from the tower. While pretty in the summer, it would be much better to be here in the peak of fall foliage season.
Love the stonework – Thanks for the Close Up

Thanks Ron. They don’t build them like this around here anymore.

A wonderful donation. This view must be marvelous at peak foliage time.
